Your First Visit to the Genetics Clinic

A Complete Preparation Guide

Are you preparing for your first genetic consultation and unsure what to expect? You are in the right place. At Gennet, we understand that a visit to a genetic clinic can raise many questions and concerns. That is why we have prepared a clear and practical guide to help you get ready with confidence and without unnecessary stress.

Why Preparation Matters

A genetic consultation is a detailed conversation and a professional review of information about you and your family. On the basis of that information, the clinical geneticist estimates genetic risk, considers whether genetic testing is appropriate, and explains what the results may mean for you and your relatives. The more accurate the information you bring, the better we can judge whether genetic testing is indicated, which type of test makes sense, and what answers can realistically be expected. Good preparation saves time, reduces uncertainty, and frees the consultation to focus on what really matters: your questions, your decisions, and the next steps.

What to Bring to the Consultation

To make things easier, we have prepared a clear checklist.

Basic Documents for Every Patient

  • Referral form / request: A referral for genetic testing from your treating physician (for example your GP for adults or children, your gynaecologist, oncologist, or another specialist). In some cases this is required for the consultation to be reimbursed by your health insurer, and it allows us to arrange follow-up care. Download the Voucher below.
  • Identification: Your health insurance card and a valid ID.
  • Medical reports:
Reports about the issue you are coming in for.
Reports of any other serious illnesses in you or your family members (where available).
For cancer, ideally the histology report and information about the type of tumour and the age of relatives at the time of diagnosis.
Results of any previous genetic testing carried out elsewhere.

  • Completed family history questionnaire: This document is central to the genetic consultation. It allows us to assess the pattern of disease in your family. Download the family history questionnaire (PDF). We recommend filling it in at home, where you can ask other family members for the details you need.

Planning a Family or Looking at Fertility?

  • The result of your partner's semen analysis (if it has already been done elsewhere).

Are You Pregnant? Please Also Bring:

  • Your pregnancy record book, including blood group and Rh factor.
  • The results of all screening tests carried out so far in this pregnancy (where these were not done at Gennet).

Important note: If you are scheduled for an invasive procedure (chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, or cordocentesis), please arrange for someone to come with you or to drive you home. You should not drive after the procedure.

Should Your Partner Come With You?

Your partner's presence is important, especially if the consultation concerns fertility, family planning, or pregnancy, since both partners are then assessed genetically. The same applies if your partner has a serious or hereditary condition, or if one runs in their family.

Your partner should also bring their health insurance card, the relevant medical reports, and a completed family history questionnaire.
