Fertilisation Methods: IVF and ICSI

The first step of creating an embryo is the union of an egg and a sperm. At Gennet, we use two scientifically proven fertilisation methods in our state-of-the-art embryology labs. The right approach depends on your partner's sperm quality and the couple's overall reproductive profile.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) – The Classic Approach

IVF is the preferred method for couples with a good sperm analysis and a sufficient number of high-quality eggs.

  • How does it work? On the day of egg retrieval, your partner provides a sperm sample. In the lab, the sample is carefully processed, and the sperm are added to the eggs in a culture dish at optimal concentration. From there, we let nature take its course in an environment that closely mimics the human body.
  • Fertilisation check: After 24 hours, our embryologist checks under the microscope to see if fertilisation has occurred. The fertilisation rate for this method typically ranges between 50% and 70%.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) – A Precise and Highly Effective Technique

ICSI is currently the most widely used and effective fertilisation method in modern assisted reproduction.

  • How does it work? Using a high-powered microscope, our skilled embryologist selects a single sperm with optimal morphology. With the help of a microneedle, this sperm is directly injected into the cytoplasm of a mature egg. This method overcomes many of the barriers that may prevent natural fertilisation.
  • Fertilisation success rate: Due to its precision, ICSI is able to achieve fertilisation in up to 90% of cases.

When Do We Recommend ICSI?

ICSI is often the chosen method, especially in cases where:

  • The sperm analysis shows low count, poor motility, or abnormal shape.
  • A previous IVF cycle resulted in no fertilisation using the standard method.
  • Only a small number of eggs were retrieved.
  • Frozen (cryopreserved) sperm are used.
  • Sperm were obtained surgically (MESA/TESE).
  • Donor eggs are being used.
  • The couple is undergoing preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do you have more questions about fertilization methods? Our team at Gennet Prague and Liberec is ready to explain everything to you.

Is ICSI better than standard IVF?
  • Egg fertilisation
  • Special laboratory methods

For couples with compromised sperm quality, ICSI is clearly more effective, increasing the likelihood of successful fertilisation. For those with excellent sperm parameters, with both methods we may gain comparable results. Your doctor will always recommend the most suitable approach.

Does ICSI increase the risk of birth defects?
  • Egg fertilisation
  • Special laboratory methods

Extensive studies have not shown a direct increase in the risk of congenital abnormalities in children conceived via ICSI compared to standard IVF.

Is ICSI included in the IVF cycle cost?
  • Egg fertilisation
  • Special laboratory methods

ICSI is a specialised laboratory technique and is charged in addition to the standard IVF cycle. We will always provide transparent information about all associated costs.
