Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): A Gentle Path to Parenthood

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a simple and minimally invasive fertility treatment that supports your journey to conception. The procedure involves placing specially prepared and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation.

At Gennet clinics in Prague and Liberec, IUI is often the first-line option for couples seeking a body-friendly way to boost their chances of having a baby.

Why to Choose IUI at Gennet?

Comprehensive diagnostics before treatment

Before recommending IUI, we perform essential tests—semen analysis, ultrasound, and fallopian tube patency assessment—to ensure this method is suitable and effective for you.

Precise timing is everything

Success with IUI depends on optimal timing. Your Gennet doctor will use ultrasound monitoring (folliculometry) to track follicle growth and determine the perfect window for insemination.

Laboratory sperm preparation

In our andrology labs, we process the sperm sample to isolate only the most motile and highest-quality sperm cells, significantly increasing the potential for fertilization.

Are You a Candidate for IUI?

IUI is an effective solution in a variety of situations. We typically recommend it for:

  • Ejaculation or erection disorders
  • Use of donor sperm: IUI is the standard method for couples using a sperm bank
  • Cervical factor infertility: Bypasses thick cervical mucus to deliver sperm directly into the uterus
  • Mildly reduced sperm count or motility: Lab preparation concentrates the best sperm
  • Unexplained infertility lasting less than two years
  • Mild endometriosis (if fallopian tubes are patent)

Initial consultation and planning

Your doctor will review your case and, based on test results, recommend IUI if it's the most appropriate option.

Ovulation monitoring

Typically performed between day 10–12 of your cycle using ultrasound to determine ovulation timing. IUI can be done in a natural cycle or with mild hormonal stimulation to ensure ovulation.

Sperm collection and preparation

On the designated day, your partner provides a semen sample in the privacy of our collection room. It is then processed and prepared in the lab.

The insemination itself

Using a thin, flexible catheter, the doctor gently inserts the prepared sperm through the cervix and into the uterus. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is painless.

Aftercare

You can go home immediately and resume normal activities. No downtime is required.

Pregnancy test

Take a pregnancy test on the day your period is expected. If positive, we'll confirm the result with a blood test measuring hCG hormone.

IUI Success Rates and When to Consider Other Options

IUI success depends on several factors, including sperm quality, the woman's age, and the underlying cause of infertility. On average, the pregnancy rate is 7–9% per cycle.

One of the key benefits of IUI is that it's a low-risk, affordable procedure. If pregnancy does not occur after several cycles, your doctor may recommend more advanced treatments such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do you have any further questions or would you like to book a consultation? Our team at Gennet Prague and Liberec is here for you.

What should I expect after IUI?
  • Infertility treatment
  • IUI

You can return to normal activities immediately. Some women may experience slight spotting or mild cramping—both are normal and not a cause for concern.

When can I take a pregnancy test?
  • Infertility treatment
  • IUI

To avoid false negatives, we recommend testing no earlier than 14 days after the procedure, ideally on the day your period is due.

Is IUI painful?
  • Infertility treatment
  • IUI

No, IUI is a painless procedure. Most women compare it to a routine cervical smear.

Are medications used during the IUI cycle?
  • Infertility treatment
  • IUI

Treatment can proceed naturally without medications. Sometimes, your doctor may recommend mild hormonal stimulation (e.g., Clomiphene Citrate, Letrozole, Tamoxifen) to support follicle development and ovulation, or progesterone to support the luteal phase after insemination.

What are the risks of IUI?
  • Infertility treatment
  • IUI

IUI is generally safe and low-risk. If hormonal stimulation is used, there's a slightly increased chance of multiple pregnancy (e.g., twins).

Are there any contraindications?
  • Infertility treatment
  • IUI

Yes. IUI cannot be performed if you have an active vaginal infection or discharge. In such cases, treatment must first resolve the issue. A key requirement for IUI success is at least one open fallopian tube and a satisfactory semen analysis.
