Sperm Freezing: Preserve your freedom of choice.

As age increases, the quality of reproductive cells declines, which can complicate later conception. Social freezing is a solution for those who are postponing parenthood for personal reasons or facing medical indications. Freezing sperm provides a biological safety net and the freedom to decide when to start a family.

What is Social Freezing?

Social freezing is a method of sperm freezing using cryopreservation, which allows their safe storage for many years. This technology provides individuals with both reproductive and professional autonomy and enables them to plan parenthood according to their current life circumstances.

  • Social freezing is a technique for freezing reproductive cells, allowing them to be safely preserved for many years, even decades.
  • It is often used by men who currently do not have a partner to start a family with or who want to prioritise their career and travel. Social freezing gives them the opportunity to postpone parenthood until the time is right.
  • It is also a suitable option for those who choose to delay parenthood for various reasons.
  • The method is commonly used by both women and men who do not currently have a partner or want to focus on their career and travel, allowing them to plan parenthood when the conditions are right.
  • Preserving fertility through cryopreservation is also important in cases where fertility may be threatened by a medical condition or demanding treatment, such as cancer therapy.

What is the purpose of social freezing?

Many men choose to freeze their sperm for medical reasons. Social freezing is also a suitable option for those who wish to postpone parenthood for various reasons.

Age

Fertility naturally decreases with age. If you are delaying parenthood, it is recommended to consider freezing your reproductive cells. This allows you to preserve your fertility at the level it was when the cells were frozen. Common reasons for delaying parenthood include education, career development, finding the right partner, or simply feeling unprepared for this step.

Certainty

We ensure state-of-the-art cryopreservation technology that maintains maximum sperm quality throughout the entire storage period. Your cells are continuously monitored in our modern cryobank.

Autoimmune diseases

Conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, along with their treatments, can lead to fertility issues.

Sperm Freezing

Men can freeze their sperm at any age, but the quantity and quality of sperm decline with increasing age. The quality of sperm is also affected by the environment in which the man lives and his lifestyle. Frozen sperm can be preserved for up to 20 years while maintaining its quality. Approximately 80% of sperm survive the freezing process.

Who is Sperm Freezing Suitable For?

Sperm freezing is suitable for men who:

Booking an initial examination

Book your initial examination (spermiogram) at our Gennet clinics. No referral is required. You can easily schedule an appointment in advance and attend the examination in person at our clinics in Prague or Liberec.

Laboratory tests

Before a spermiogram, blood and urine samples are required to perform legally mandated tests for infectious diseases. If all results are in order, the spermiogram can be performed, followed by sperm freezing. When booking your spermiogram, please also schedule the laboratory tests, which must take place before sperm collection.

Sperm Collection

The sample is collected in a discreet environment in our dedicated collection rooms, ensuring complete privacy. In individual cases, the sample can be collected at home; however, it must be delivered to the clinic within one hour and kept at body temperature. If there are serious medical reasons preventing standard collection, sperm can be obtained using the microsurgical TESE method.

Semen analysis (spermiogram)

This examination is performed in our embryology laboratory, where we assess ejaculate volume, sperm count, motility, and morphology. As spermiogram parameters naturally vary over time, repeat testing may be required in some cases. This approach ensures a sufficient quantity of high-quality sperm for successful freezing.

Sperm freezing

The collected sperm is then frozen using the most advanced and gentle method - cryopreservation. This is a rapid freezing technique in which cells are quickly cooled to -196 degrees C within seconds. During the process, cryoprotective agents are used to protect the cells from damage. The treated sperm is then stored in liquid nitrogen tanks, where it can maintain its quality for many years.

What is the success rate of sperm freezing?
  • Social Freezing
  • Sperm freezing

The success rate of a sperm freezing cycle is exceptionally high. We use the most advanced vitrification method for freezing, which allows about 80% of sperm to survive the process. The cells are then stored in liquid nitrogen, where they can be preserved at their quality for up to 20 years.

When is the best time to talk to a doctor about social freezing?
  • Social Freezing
  • Sperm freezing
  • Egg freezing

We recommend considering social freezing between the ages of 30 and 35. However, if you're thinking about freezing your reproductive cells and are outside this age range, consulting with an IVF specialist is still advisable. The doctor will outline your options and provide recommendations on how to manage potential fertility preservation for the future.

What are the risks of social freezing?
  • Social Freezing
  • Egg freezing

The risks associated with social freezing primarily relate to hormonal stimulation and the egg retrieval process.

Common side effects of hormonal stimulation include redness at the injection site, breast tenderness, bloating, and mood swings. These symptoms usually subside within a few days after the egg retrieval.

In some cases, the ovaries may react excessively to hormonal stimulation, resulting in a condition known as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). However, due to comprehensive medical testing and the individualised treatment plans we establish for each patient, the risk of this complication at our clinic is minimal.

To prevent complications, it is important not only for the doctor to take an individualised approach but also for the patient to carefully follow all instructions and recommendations given by the doctor and staff.

Is it worth investing in social freezing?
  • Social Freezing
  • Sperm freezing
  • Egg freezing

The term "worth it" is personal and highly subjective. Some individuals may have a 50% chance of getting pregnant using their frozen eggs. For some, this may not justify the investment, while for others, it could be exactly what they expect from social freezing.

What happens if I never use my frozen eggs or sperm?
  • Social Freezing
  • Sperm freezing
  • Egg freezing

You can choose to have the reproductive cells disposed of or donated for scientific research.

What are my chances of getting pregnant if I have frozen my reproductive cells?
  • Social Freezing
  • Sperm freezing
  • Egg freezing

The egg and sperm each contribute 50% to the embryo. It is very difficult to determine the exact chances of achieving pregnancy and having a healthy baby without knowing the quality of the partner's reproductive cells.

What can be said with certainty about social freezing is that it helps preserve fertility at the level at which the reproductive cells were frozen.
