Frequently Asked Questions

How can I book an appointment for the initial consultation?
  • Allergology and Immunology

It depends on where you are coming from and what you are interested in.

If you have been referred by another Gennet physician (from IVF or genetics), the appointment will be arranged directly by the nurses.

If you are coming from outside, please fill in the contact form and specify the reason for your visit. A nurse will usually contact you by phone within a week to arrange an appointment. In cases of suspected drug allergy, we first request medical documentation. Each case is assessed individually, and only then is the appointment confirmed.

Prefer direct contact? Call our call centre (+420 222 313 000, allergology) or email alergologie@gennet.cz.

Do I need to reschedule my appointment or arrange a follow up?
  • Allergology and Immunology
I am already under your care and would like advice. Is a consultation sufficient?
  • Allergology and Immunology

Message or call us. A nurse will assess your situation and recommend whether a phone consultation is sufficient or if an in person visit is appropriate.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
  • Allergology and Immunology
  • Bring your health insurance card, ID, and a referral from your doctor. Also bring any medical reports related to your condition.
  • IVF patients: a report from your gynecologist or IVF specialist and results of previous tests (sperm analysis, genetic consultation, previous immunological tests).
  • Patients with allergies: reports from previous clinics.

Are you coming for testing of airborne allergies such as pollen, dust mites, animals, or mould? If your health condition allows, please stop taking oral antihistamines one week before the test. Do not discontinue any other medication. You do not need to come fasting.

What happens during the first appointment?
  • Allergology and Immunology

Please allow 60 to 90 minutes for your first visit. The doctor will take a detailed medical history, including family, personal, gynecological, occupational, and allergy history. You will be asked about medications, pets at home, smoking, and the course of your symptoms.

If needed, this may be followed by skin tests, lung function testing, or a blood draw. At the end, you will receive a medical report with clear recommendations for the next steps.

Is the examination covered by health insurance?
  • Allergology and Immunology

Yes, we are contracted with all health insurance companies in the Czech Republic. For self paying patients, our current price list is available.

Do you treat children as well?
  • Allergology and Immunology

We primarily focus on adult patients. Some of our physicians also treat children, but capacity is significantly limited. For more information, please contact us.

In allergology and clinical immunology we start with a careful clinical history and rational diagnostic work. Specialised tests are chosen with intent, only where they will actually change treatment. Our priority is the patient's safety, an accurate diagnosis, and a practical plan, whether the issue is drug hypersensitivity, seasonal allergy, or an immune disorder. Close cooperation with colleagues in other specialties allows us to offer connected, complete care without unnecessary delays.

Allergology and Clinical Immunology

None

Our department cares for patients with allergies, drug hypersensitivity, and immune disorders, from the first suspicion through to long-term follow-up. Our work is careful diagnostic assessment, a clear explanation of the results, and a treatment plan that makes sense to you.

Close cooperation with the other specialties at Gennet (clinical genetics, IVF) means everything important can be taken care of in one place.

Suspected Drug Allergy

A reaction to a medicine can complicate treatment, but with the right diagnostic work we can tell most patients reliably which medicines are safe for them.

When Is It Time to Look Into a Suspected Drug Allergy?

  • After a reaction such as a rash, swelling, breathlessness, hives, or loss of consciousness following a medication.
  • After repeated trouble with the "same" or related medicines.
  • If your records show an "allergy" (for example to penicillin) that has never been reliably confirmed.

Our Diagnostic Approach

We Listen to Your Story (Clinical History)
Laboratory Tests From Blood
Skin Tests
Exposure (Provocation) Tests

We Listen to Your Story (Clinical History)

What actually happened is the key. We ask about the exact name of the medicine, the time between dosing and the reaction, the symptoms, and what treatment was given. The other medicines you take and your overall health are also important.

Laboratory Tests From Blood

We perform them in selected drug classes for certain acute reactions such as itching, urticaria, and anaphylaxis.

Skin Tests

This is the primary diagnostic tool for medications with a typical allergic mechanism, such as penicillins.

Exposure (Provocation) Tests

This is the most accurate method for safely ruling out an allergy or confirming tolerance to an alternative medication. It is performed only after careful consideration and in patients at low risk.

What Will the Workup Tell You?

What Will the Workup Tell You?

Our goal is to identify which medicines you can take without concern and which to avoid in the future.

The Most Common Myths

We Test "Allergies" You May Not Actually Have

Myth 1: Allergy to Penicillin Antibiotics

Many people have an "allergy to penicillin" recorded in their notes unnecessarily, but on testing only a small fraction turn out to be truly allergic. The label leads to the use of less suitable antibiotics.

The standard approach: a careful clinical history, then skin and laboratory tests, and where the risk is low, drug provocation testing to remove the false label. When the likelihood of a real allergy is very low, the skin and laboratory tests can be skipped and only the provocation test performed.

Myth 2: Reactions to Local Anaesthesia (at the Dentist)

A genuine allergy here is rare. The symptoms (weakness, palpitations) are more often caused by stress. We can assess the risk and test the specific anaesthetic so that you can feel confident next time.

Myth No. 3: “Iodine Allergy” and Contrast Media

This is not an allergy to the element iodine itself. Reactions to iodine-based disinfectants and reactions to iodinated contrast media are not connected. Modern contrast media are far safer, and with testing or preventive medication we can make sure the examination is safe for you.
