Consulting room for hereditary conditioned oncologic diseases:

Most oncogenic diseases occur sporadically, i.e. other members of the patient’s family are unaffected. However, we know that about 5-10% of tumours are heritable. Their causes are inborn mutations (changes) within certain genes, which are transmitted from the parents to the children by means of the germ cells. The hereditary conditioned oncogenic diseases most often affect the breasts, ovaries, intestines and uterus.

Genetic examination is suitable in case of a repeated occurrence of tumours in more family members, especially if the disease started at an early age. Consultations in a specialized consulting room are suitable as well as in case of future parents, who had been treated oncologically in the past.

In a genetic consultation, teh patient’s personal, and especially family, medical history (minimally in 3 generations) is analysed in detail. Based on the analyses of these data and study of health documentation we will determine if it is possible for the patient (or the ill relative) to perform a special laboratory examination for finding the genetic oncogenic disposition. If the inborn genetic predisposition is found, the risk of an origin of the oncogenic disease is also determined and relevant preventive measures are recommended.

In order to attend the genetic examination the patient should have a recommendation from the attending oncologist , a general practitioner or a gynaecologist, in which the diagnosis (including the results of laboratory tests) is stated.
